Cesar Chavez and the Struggle for Farmworker Justice

Some very distressing revelations about the leader of the farmworker movement have been
provided by the New York Times. Accusations of sexual abuse by Cesar Chavez of teen girls and
the rape of Dolores Huerta have led to widespread cancellations across the country of annual
celebrations honoring him for his leadership. These revelations create an ethical quandary for the
nation, which has named streets, buildings, and holidays in his honor. There are two levels at
which Chavez should be judged, however, the individual and national.
