The Rackham Graduate School’s Communications Team seeks a versatile and highly creative Communications Specialist to manage the school’s social-media channels and create compelling and engaging content for web, email, and print. The specialist will be counted on to write and edit materials, and will work closely with the Communications Director to determine content strategy. The ideal candidate will be an effective project manager, an excellent writer, and someone who thrives in a collaborative team.

Responsibilities
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Source, research, write, and edit stories featuring Rackham students and alumni for the Rackham website, with a particular eye for stories that intrigue broad audiences and help emphasize the value of Rackham across campus and beyond. Write and edit content for various internal and external email newsletters. Create and revise content for sections of the Rackham website as needed. Collaborate with the Communications Director and other members of the Communications team to brainstorm ways to promote Rackham across a variety of media. Collaborate with the Communications Director on editorial decisions, content decisions, and all aspects of the school’s communication strategy.

Maintain the social-media presence of the graduate school with consistent editorial and communications standards, branding, and scheduling. Write and edit content to engage our audiences over Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Monitor relevant online conversations for institutional feedback. Analyze the performance of content on social media using meaningful metrics. Research emerging trends in best-of-field social-media practices and emerging social platforms. Liaise with other social leaders on campus and represent Rackham in this area.

Support social media, development, and communications with meaningful administrative work, primarily transcription of interviews.

Regularly attend university and school meetings, trainings, workshops, etc. Actively participate by assuming leadership or contributing roles on committees, work groups, focus groups, and/or task forces.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with 2-4 years of professional experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills with prior experience writing content for web-based outlets. Experience writing and editing content for social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) in a professional setting, matching content with the appropriate platform and audience. Excellent copy editing skills and ability to ensure consistency across publications. Demonstrated ability to work well in a collaborative, team-based, positive work environment. Proven ability and willingness to work with diverse populations. Proven ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining a high level of attention to detail. Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization. Ability to travel to locations across campus or off-campus to interview subjects or cover events via social media.

Desired Qualifications
Experience developing and writing communications material for higher education. Experience handling paid promotions on various social-media platforms. Familiarity with the University of Michigan’s organizational policies, rules, and regulations. Broad knowledge of graduate education and the diverse cultures of the University schools, colleges and units with which the Graduate School interacts.

The Coordinator of Outreach and Recruitment at Western Michigan University Division of Multicultural Affairs will be primarily responsible for managing and overseeing recruitment and outreach activities for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). The recruiter will serve as a liaison with students, parents, and other interested parties primarily in South Texas and throughout the state of Michigan. This is a full-time, year-round, salaried position with a competitive benefits package.

The interested individual must be team-oriented and have a passion for working with the Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker (MSFW) population, higher education, and college access. Additionally, strong organization and public speaking skills are necessary to successfully navigate this position.

Minimum qualifications required are a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, bilingual in English and Spanish, one year of relevant experience, a valid driver’s license, strong organizational skills, strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. OverviewPoverty Solutions at U-M (poverty.umich.edu) is a new interdisciplinary initiative that aims to become a leader in informing, identifying, and testing new strategies for the prevention and alleviation of poverty in Michigan, the nation and the world. While rooted in an understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty, the focus of Poverty Solutions is an action-based agenda aimed at informing strategies for the prevention and alleviation of poverty. Through research, engaged learning and by joining forces with policymakers and community organizations, this initiative is uniquely placed to foster positive change.

Poverty Solutions is partnering with the Population Studies Center at the U-M Institute for Social Research and the Ford School of Public Policy to conduct the Detroit Metropolitan Area Community Study (DMACS), an ongoing survey of Detroit area residents about their community, including their experiences, perceptions, priorities, and aspirations. DMACS is envisioned as a long-term, large-scale investment in the people and communities of metro Detroit. This survey will provide data in a manner that is scientifically valid, accessible to a wide range of users, covers the entire metropolitan area, captures change over time, and reaches underserved/under-represented groups. It will have the capacity to rapidly deliver research-quality information about the impact of current changes and initiatives in the City, allowing dynamic tracking of how residents perceive, evaluate, and connect with their communities. It will be customizable to meet the needs of policymakers and other stakeholders so as to provide information that can inform future public policy decisions and investments and will provide citizens a platform for communicating their needs, their visions of the future for both their local areas and the broader region, and their reactions to new initiatives.

We are seeking to hire up to 2 energetic and committed bilingual (Spanish / English) individuals to serve as Outreach Staff. Outreach Staff will work as a part of a team to successfully engage Detroit residents into the DMACS survey. They will also provide relevant information about city-wide resources that are available to residents. Members of the outreach team will not be soliciting funds from residents. These positions will be based at the U-M Detroit Center (3663 Woodward Ave) with considerable time spent in Detroit neighborhoods and occasional meetings in Ann Arbor.

Responsibilities*

Recruit Detroit residents into the Detroit Metropolitan Area Community Study through door-to-door canvassing (Note: Data collectors will encourage and enable residents to complete the online survey, but will not conduct interviews themselves);Distribute information about city-wide resources that are potentially available to residents (workforce development support, property tax exemption information, summer youth employment opportunities, etc.);Prepare mailings and conduct phone follow-up calls to Detroit residents; Collect and enter outreach data in project systems; andConduct other administrative/clerical duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Spanish language skills at or above ILR Level 3 (Professional Working Proficiency)Ability to sustain door-to-door walking for 2-3 hours at a time and support others in the same;Comfort knocking on doors of strangers and walking on potentially unfamiliar streets;Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including an outgoing personality with an interest in helping people;Basic computer skills (file management, Microsoft software, email and web-navigation);Ability to work as part of a team and effectively interact with diverse team members;Demonstrated ability to follow written and spoken instructions; andA high school diploma or equivalent.

Desired Qualifications*

Additional Information

Outreach Staff are expected to commit 20 hour per week. A flexible schedule is required. Staff can expect to be in the field several evenings (4-8pm) and weekends (12-5pm) and should be able to conduct 2-4 hour door-to-door shifts. Staff are required to complete an online U-M PEERRS training.

Required Qualifications*

Must demonstrate success in managing marketing/communications, brand strategy, and the writing, editing, and production of newsletters, press releases, and marketing materials. Needs to have experience successfully integrating digital media into strategic initiatives. Must have knowledge of and familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, AP style, and the conventions of print production and web publishing. Experience with MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, and web editing software. Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, and the ability to complete projects on deadline are expected. Good judgment, poise, and creativity under pressure while working in a matrix environment are necessary.
